The Ethel Apartment House is a historic apartment building located in Springfield, Massachusetts. It's a four-story building made of red brick. This building was constructed in 1912 for Jacob Blisky, a successful local businessman. It cost about $14,000 to build back then.

A local architect named Burton Geckler designed the Ethel Apartment House. He was known for designing many other apartment buildings in the 1910s. Because of its history and unique design, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.

About the Ethel Apartment House

The Ethel Apartment House stands on Patton Street in Springfield. It's easy to spot near the highway ramps for Interstate 291 and Interstate 91.

What Does It Look Like?

This building has four stories and is made of red brick. The front of the building, called the facade, is split into three tall sections. The sections on the sides are rounded, like big bay windows. Each of these side sections has two windows on every floor.

The main entrance is in the middle section. Above the entrance, there are three sets of paired windows. All the windows have special sills and tops, called lintels, made of a stone-like material. A metal trim, known as a tin cornice, goes around the top of the building, just below the roof.

Why Is It Important?

The Ethel Apartment House was built in 1912. It was one of the few apartment buildings constructed in this part of Springfield at that time. Before buildings like this, the street mostly had one or two-family homes.

During the 1960s, many older buildings in the North End of Springfield were torn down. This was part of a big city improvement project. However, the Ethel Apartment House, along with Laurel Hall next door, managed to survive these changes. This makes it a special reminder of what the area looked like long ago.
