Etna is a small place in Coles County, Illinois, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is not officially a city or town with its own local government.
Etna is located about 656 feet (200 meters) above sea level. It is part of a larger area called the Charleston–Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area. This area includes a few towns and the land around them.
A Look Back in Time
Etna was once known by a slightly different name, Aetna. The community got its name from Mount Etna. This famous volcano is located on the island of Sicily in Italy.
A post office was opened in Etna in 1859. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail. This post office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1943.
