Etsowish-simmegee-itshin facts for kids

Etsowish-simmegee-itshin was a respected leader of the Kalispel tribe in the early 1800s. His name meant "Grizzly Bear Standing". He later became known as Loyola after being baptized by Father De Smet around 1842 or 1843.

Loyola was known for his strong belief in the Catholic faith. He worked hard to guide his people to follow the teachings of the missionaries. He encouraged them to take part in church services and traditions.

A Respected Leader

Loyola was a strict leader when it came to keeping order among his people. However, he was also deeply loved and respected. His tribe looked up to him like a father figure. He cared for them and guided them through important times.

Loyola's Later Years

Towards the end of his life, Loyola faced a very sad time. He lost his wife and three children within a short period. This was a great sorrow for him.

Loyola passed away on April 6, 1854. After his death, Victor Alamiken became the new chief of the Kalispel tribe. This Victor was different from another leader named Victor from the Flathead (Salish) tribe who lived around the same time.
