Ettore Pais (born July 27, 1856, in Borgo San Dalmazzo, Italy – died 1939, in Rome) was a very important Italian historian. He studied ancient times, like the Roman Empire. He was also an expert in old Latin writings found on monuments and even became a politician in Italy.

Early Life and Education

Ettore Pais was born in a town called Borgo San Dalmazzo in Italy. His father, Michele Pais Leoni, was a nobleman from Sassari, a city on the island of Sardinia. His mother, Carlotta Tranchero, was from the Piedmont region of Italy.

Ettore started his studies in Lucca and Florence in 1874. He earned his university degree from Florence in 1878. Some of his important teachers included Atto Vannucci and Domenico Comparetti. Comparetti was a philologist, meaning he studied languages and old texts.

A Historian's Journey

After finishing his studies, Ettore Pais spent some years in Sardinia. In 1881, he published a book called La Sardegna prima del dominio romano. This book was about Sardinia before the Roman Empire took control.

In the same year, he went to Berlin to study with a famous historian named Theodor Mommsen. They worked together on a huge project called the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum. This project collected and published thousands of ancient Latin inscriptions. Their part, the fifth volume, came out in 1884.

Teaching and Research

Ettore Pais began his teaching career in Palermo in 1886. Two years later, in 1888, he moved to Pisa. There, he became a professor of ancient history. He taught in Pisa until 1899.

After Pisa, he started teaching in Naples. Later, he even taught in the United States at the University of Wisconsin–Madison starting in 1905.

From 1910 to 1914, Pais had a very important job. He was the director of the Naples National Archaeological Museum. He also oversaw the excavations, or digging, at the ancient city of Pompeii.

Pais traveled a lot to study at top universities around the world. He received many special honors called "honorary degrees." These degrees were given to him by universities like Oxford, Chicago, and Paris. He also taught courses in many cities, including Paris (at the Sorbonne), Bucharest, Prague, Madrid, Barcelona, Boston, Cambridge, New York, and Chicago.

Important Books

Ettore Pais continued to write important books throughout his life. In 1911, he published La civiltà dei nuraghi e lo sviluppo sociologico della Sardegna. This book was about the ancient Nuragic civilization in Sardinia.

In 1923, he wrote Storia della Sardegna e della Corsica durante il dominio romano. This book covered the history of Sardinia and Corsica during the time of Roman rule.

Later Life and Politics

From 1923 until 1931, Ettore Pais was a professor at the University of Rome. Besides his academic work, he also became involved in politics. From 1922 until his death in 1939, he served as a member of the Italian senate. The senate is a part of the government that helps make laws for the country.
