Eucarlia is a group, or genus, of millipedes. These fascinating creatures are a type of spirobolidan millipede. There are six known species in the Eucarlia genus. Most of these species live on the beautiful island nation of Seychelles. One species, however, is found on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
Sadly, four of the Eucarlia species from Seychelles are facing serious threats. The IUCN Red List, which tracks the conservation status of species, has listed them as either endangered, critically endangered, or even extinct. This means they are at high risk of disappearing forever.
What do Eucarlia Millipedes Look Like?
Eucarlia millipedes are not very big. They usually grow to be about 20 to 45 millimeters (which is about 0.8 to 1.8 inches) long. Female millipedes are often a little bit longer than the males.
Their bodies are made up of many segments, usually between 35 and 55 of them. They can come in different colors like solid gray, brown, or orange. Some even have a cool stripe down the middle of their back!
Species of Eucarlia
There are six known species of Eucarlia millipedes. Here's a look at where they live and how they are doing:
- Eucarlia alluaudi
This species was first found in 1892 on Marianne Island in the Seychelles. Sadly, it is now considered 
. This means it no longer exists anywhere in the world.
- Eucarlia haemorrhantus
The location and conservation status of this species are not yet fully known.
- Eucarlia hoffmani
This species lives in the Seychelles. It is currently listed as 
. This means it is at a very high risk of extinction in the wild.
- Eucarlia mauriesi
Also found in the Seychelles, Eucarlia mauriesi is in an even more serious situation. It is listed as 
. This is the highest risk category before extinction.
- Eucarlia uncinatus
This species is special because it is found far away from the others, on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. Its conservation status has not yet been assessed.
- Eucarlia urophora
Another species from the Seychelles, Eucarlia urophora is also listed as . It has a unique long extension at the very end of its body, called a telson.
