The Eudora Welty House & Garden is a historic home in Jackson, Mississippi. It was the house of the famous American author Eudora Welty for almost 80 years. Her parents built the house in 1925, and it's where she wrote many of her well-known stories.
Eudora and her mother, Chestina, spent many years creating and caring for the beautiful garden next to the house. The home is now a National Historic Landmark. This is a special title given to places that are very important to the history of the United States.
After being restored, the house and garden opened in 2006 as a museum. People can now visit to see where the famous author lived and worked. Next door, a Visitor Center opened in 2009. There, you can buy tickets, see some of Welty's awards, and learn more about her life.
The Visitor Center
The Visitor Center is located right next door to Eudora Welty's house. It's the first stop for anyone wanting to tour the home. Inside, you can learn about Welty's life, her books, and her awards.
There is also a shop where you can buy books by Eudora Welty and other souvenirs. The Visitor Center is home to a "Little Library," which is a free library for the community. Anyone can take a book or leave one for others to enjoy.
The Famous Garden
The garden at the Welty house was designed by Eudora's mother, Chestina, in 1925. Eudora and her mother called the garden their "labor of love." It is a popular part of the museum tour.
The garden has several sections, including a rose garden and a woodland garden. Chestina designed it so there would be a "succession of bloom." This means that different flowers would be in bloom all year long. For example, over 40 types of camellias bloom during the winter.
In the summer, a special plant called the night-blooming cereus flowers on the porch. These flowers only open up at night. Eudora Welty often invited her friends over to watch this special event. Many of the garden's flowers are mentioned in Welty's books.
