Eugène Anselme Sébastien Léon Desmarest (1816–1889) was a French scientist who studied animals. He was known as a zoologist, someone who studies all kinds of animals, and an entomologist, who specializes in insects. His father, Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest, was also a famous scientist.

What He Wrote

Eugène Desmarest helped write parts of a very big book series called the Natural History Encyclopedia. This huge project aimed to cover everything known about nature at the time.

  • In 1860, he wrote a section about Hymenoptera. This is a group of insects that includes bees, wasps, and ants. His work was published in Volume 18 of the encyclopedia.
  • Later, in 1874, he wrote another important section for Volume 19. This time, he focused on Reptiles and Fish.

His contributions helped people learn a lot about different types of animals and insects during his time.
