Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest (born March 6, 1784 – died June 4, 1838) was a French zoologist and author. He studied animals and wrote many books about them. His father, Nicolas Desmarest, was also a scientist. Anselme's son, Eugène Desmarest, followed in their footsteps and became a scientist too.
Anselme was a student of two very famous scientists: Georges Cuvier and Alexandre Brongniart. In 1815, he became a professor of zoology at the National Veterinary School of Alfort (École nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort). This was a big achievement! He was also honored by being elected to important groups like the American Philosophical Society in 1819 and the Académie Nationale de Médecine in 1820.
