Eugein I of Alt Clut facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Eugein, also known as Ywain, was an important ruler of a kingdom called Alt Clut. This kingdom was located in what is now Scotland, centered around a strong fortress known as Dumbarton Rock. He lived in the mid-7th century, around the year 642, and passed away sometime before 658.

Eugein was part of a royal family. His father was Beli I, who was likely the king before him. Eugein also had sons who became rulers. One son was Elfin, who ruled Alt Clut later on. Another possible son, Dumnagual, also ruled Alt Clut and died in 694. Eugein might have been the brother or half-brother of Bridei III, a powerful king of the Picts who won a famous battle called the Battle of Dun Nechtain.

Who Was Eugein?

Eugein was a king of Alt Clut, a kingdom of the Brittonic people. This kingdom was very important in early Scottish history. It was based at Dumbarton Rock, a naturally strong defensive spot. Kings like Eugein helped shape the region during a time of many different kingdoms.

The Battle of Strathcarron

One of the most important events linked to Eugein is a big battle. Historical records, like the Annals of Ulster, tell us about this fight. In 642, a king named Hoan or Oan (who is believed to be Eugein) led the Britons to victory. They defeated and killed Domnall Brecc, the King of Dál Riata. This battle happened at a place called Srath Caruin, which is now known as Strathcarron.

What Happened at Strathcarron?

The battle was a major win for Eugein's forces. A special part added to an old poem called Y Gododdin talks about this event. It's often called the "Strathcarron interpolation." This poem says that "Nwython's grandson" (which means Eugein, as he was the grandson of Neithon of Alt Clut) won against "Dyfnwal Frych" (Domnall Brecc). Domnall Brecc was the ruler of "Pentir," which refers to Kintyre or the kingdom of Dál Riata. This victory showed Eugein's strength as a military leader.

When Did Eugein Rule?

Eugein's exact dates of rule are not fully known. We know he was active around 642 because of the Battle of Strathcarron. He passed away sometime before 658. In that year, another king of Alt Clut, named Guret, is recorded as having died. Guret is not mentioned in the family records of Eugein. He might have been Eugein's brother or even another son.
