Eugenio Florit facts for kids
Eugenio Florit (born October 15, 1903 – died June 22, 1999) was a talented Cuban writer. He was also an essayist, a literary critic, a translator, and even a radio actor. Besides his writing, he worked as a diplomat for his country.
A Life of Words
Eugenio Florit was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1903. He lived in Catalonia until 1918. That year, he moved with his family to Cuba, where his mother was born. He quickly became part of the exciting cultural scene in Havana.
Even though he was born in Spain, Florit's work is a big part of Cuban culture. In Havana, he studied at Colegio La Salle from 1918 to 1922. After that, he studied law at the Universidad de la Habana.
In 1927, he started working for the Cuban government. He was a lecturer and a radio actor too. During this time, he joined the group that created Revista de Avance. This was a very important magazine for Cuban culture.
Florit's main focus was poetry. He loved "pure poetry" and was inspired by classic Spanish writers. His first book was "32 Poemas Breves." It mixed classic, romantic, and symbolic styles.
In 1940, Florit moved to New York to work at the Cuban Consulate. He received many awards from Spanish and American universities. He was often considered for the famous Premio Cervantes.
Florit always said he felt Cuban, even though he lived in the United States for a long time. His last visit to Cuba was in 1959. This was the year the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro succeeded. He taught Latin American literature at Barnard College and retired in 1969.
Florit wrote about 40 books. In 1974, he published "Tiempo y Agonía." In this book, he wrote about life and death. He also showed how much he missed Cuba. He found ways to share his feelings in his poems. His last work, "Hasta luego," came out in 1992. Eugenio Florit passed away in Miami in 1999.
Florit had a close friendship with the famous Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez. Many of Florit's writings were done with Jiménez. Jiménez admired Florit's gentle and noble spirit. He saw Florit as a unique blend of Spanish and Cuban culture.
