Early Life and Military Career
Eugenio de Espinosa joined the Spanish army when he was young. He quickly became a Sergeant Major. This was an important rank in the army.
Becoming a Governor
On September 21, 1631, Espinosa received a new role. He and Nicolás Ponce de León became co-governors of La Florida. La Florida was the name for the Spanish territory in what is now Florida. They took over from the previous governor, Andrés Rodríguez de Villegas. This change happened possibly because the old governor was ill. Nicolás Ponce de León was the official Contador, which means he was the accountant for the province.
Challenges During His Term
During his time as governor, Espinosa faced a special review. This review was called a residencia. It was like a check-up on how he managed things. People looked into how money was spent. Espinosa was questioned about funds meant for local Native American tribes. This money was called the "Indian fund." It was part of a yearly payment from the Spanish king, called the situado.
The "Indian fund" was used to buy gifts for tribal leaders. These gifts included trade goods. The goal was to build good relationships with the tribes. It also helped to keep them loyal to the Spanish Crown and the Catholic Church.
End of His Governorship
Governor Rodríguez de Villegas passed away in 1633. Luis de Horruytiner then became the new governor. Because of this, Eugenio de Espinosa and Nicolás Ponce de León's time as co-governors ended.
