Eukanuba (pronounced EW-kə-NOO-bə) is a well-known brand of dog food and cat food. It is made and owned by Mars, Incorporated in most parts of the world. In Europe, the brand is owned by Spectrum Brands. Before 2014, a company called Procter & Gamble used to own Eukanuba. Eukanuba makes many different types of food for pets. They have 17 recipes for dogs and 13 for cats.

In 2014, Procter & Gamble (P&G) decided to sell its pet food brands, including Eukanuba. They sold Eukanuba, Iams, and Natura brands to Mars, Incorporated. This deal included their pet food business in North America, Latin America, and parts of Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa. Later that year, P&G also sold its European pet care business to Spectrum Brands.

History of Eukanuba

Eukanuba started in 1969. Paul Iams, who also created the Iams pet food brand, wanted to make a special new food. He decided to give this new formula a unique name. He chose "Eukanuba." This word was used by a jazz musician named Hoagy Carmichael. It meant "the best" or "something supreme."

How Eukanuba Food is Made

The Eukanuba factory in Leipsic, Ohio, was once the biggest dog food plant for P&G. Inside the factory, special machines called metal detectors are used. These detectors help find any unwanted objects that might have accidentally fallen into the food.

Each bag of pet food has numbers printed on it. These numbers show the exact day and hour the food was made. This helps the company keep track of every bag. If there is ever a problem, they can find out exactly when and where the food was produced.

Eukanuba products use both animal ingredients and animal by-products. By-products are parts of animals that are not usually eaten by humans. These can include things like lungs, kidneys, or liver. They do not include parts like hair, horns, or hooves. Most of the ingredients come from the United States. However, some special vitamins and minerals are brought in from other countries, like China.

Eukanuba Sponsorships

Eukanuba has sponsored many events, especially dog shows. For many years, Eukanuba was the main sponsor of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. This is a very big dog show. The sponsorship continued until December 2015.

In 2008, the show also started hosting the Eukanuba World Challenge. Eukanuba also sponsors the Teva Mountain Games, which are outdoor sports events.

Since July 2015, Eukanuba has been the main sponsor of the Eukanuba Stage Stop Race. This is a famous sled dog race held in Jackson, Wyoming. It used to be called the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race.

In December 2016, a sister company of Eukanuba, Royal Canin, took over the sponsorship of the AKC National Championship. The show was then renamed the "AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin."
