Eustace de Vaux, also known as Eustace de Vallibus, was an important English noble in the 12th century. He was the Lord of Castle Carrock and Hayton, which were areas of land he controlled.
About Eustace de Vaux
Eustace de Vaux was the third son of Hubert I de Vaux. His father, Hubert, was the Lord of Gilsland. Eustace's mother was named Grecia.
Land and Gifts
Eustace received the lands of Castle Carrock and Hayton from his father, Hubert. His older brother, Robert, later confirmed this gift. This meant Robert agreed that Eustace owned these lands.
Eustace also gave some land in Castle Carrock and Hayton to a religious house. This was the Augustinian Lanercost Priory. A priory is like a monastery. His brother Robert had founded this priory. The land he gave was called a carucate, which was an old way to measure land, usually enough for one plow team.
His Successor
Eustace was followed as lord by his son, Adam. Adam's children later took the family name "de Castlecarrock." This showed their connection to the land Eustace had owned.
Family Life
Eustace de Vaux married a woman named Alice. She was the sister and co-heiress of Robert, who was the son of a man named Bueth. This means Alice shared in her family's inheritance.
Eustace and Alice had two children:
- Adam de Castlecarrock, who also had children later on.
- Isabella de Castlecarrock, who married her cousin, John de Denton. They also had children.
