Noble family de Vaux

Hubert de Vaux, also known as Hubert de Vallibus, was an important English noble who lived in the 1100s. He was known for his loyalty and service to the English crown during a time of great change.

Hubert de Vaux's Life and Times

Hubert de Vaux started as a landholder, or "tenant in chief," under Baldwin de Redvers. Baldwin was a powerful earl who owned much land in Devonshire, England. Hubert held land at a place called Farwood Barton.

Loyalty During the Anarchy

During a difficult period in English history known as the Anarchy, there was a civil war. This war was between King Stephen of England and Empress Matilda, who both wanted to rule England. Baldwin de Redvers rebelled against King Stephen. Because of this, Baldwin was sent away to Anjou, a region in France.

Hubert de Vaux likely lost his lands in England when Baldwin was banished. He then followed Baldwin and began working for Empress Matilda in France. Hubert was present when Matilda signed important documents, called "charters," in France.

Service to Henry II

In 1149, Hubert was with Henry FitzEmpress, who was Matilda's son. Henry later became King Henry II of England. They were in Devizes, a town in England, as Henry traveled to Scotland to be knighted by his uncle, King David I of Scotland.

Hubert's loyalty paid off. He received new lands and the important area of Gilsland. Gilsland is located on the border between Northumberland and Cumbria in northern England. He also gained control of Corby and Catterlen in Cumbria.

Barony of Gilsland

King Henry II gave Hubert the title of "Baron of Gilsland." This was a reward for Hubert's help to Henry in France against King Stephen. It was also for his service in 1157, when Henry took back Cumberland from the Scots.

Before Hubert, another noble, Ranulph de Meschines, tried to give Gilsland to his brother William. However, William could not remove the local lord, Gille, who was the son of Bueth. Gille eventually died, and King Henry II officially gave Gilsland to Hubert in 1158.

Hubert de Vaux is believed to have started building castles at Naworth and Corby. He held the lands of Gilsland by providing two knights to the King when needed. This was a common way for nobles to pay for their lands. Hubert was known to have died around 1164. In 1165, King Henry II confirmed the ownership of Gilsland to Hubert's son, Robert.
