Catterlen is a small village in Cumbria, England. It is located about 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Penrith, Cumbria. In 2011, about 605 people lived in Catterlen.
The village is built along a main road, the B5305. This road actually divides Catterlen into two parts. A major motorway, the M6, also has an exit (Junction 41) right at Catterlen.
Catterlen is part of a larger area called a civil parish. This parish also includes the village of Newton Reigny. Newton Reigny used to be its own separate parish from 1866 to 1934. Before that, both villages were part of an even bigger Newton Reigny Parish.
You can find a large old building called Catterlen Hall nearby. It used to be a pele tower, which was a small, fortified house. These towers were built in the past to protect people from raids. Catterlen Hall is actually closer to Newton Reigny than to Catterlen village itself.
The area is also home to Newton Rigg College. This college was once part of Askham Bryan College, which is based in Yorkshire.
What Does the Name Catterlen Mean?
The name Catterlen comes from an old language called Common Brittonic. This language was spoken by people in Britain long ago.
The first part of the name, Catter, comes from the word cadeir. This word means "throne" or "chair."
The second part of the name, len, comes from the word lẹ:n. In Welsh, a similar word, llwyn, means "a thicket" or "a small group of trees and bushes." So, the name Catterlen might mean something like "throne by the thicket" or "chair in the bushes."
