Eden, Cumbria facts for kids
Eden is a local government district in Cumbria, England. Its main office is in Penrith. The district gets its name from the River Eden, which flows north through the area towards Carlisle.
Eden covers a large area of about 2,156 square kilometers (832 square miles). This makes it the eighth largest district in England. It is also the biggest district that is not a unitary authority (a type of local government). Eden has the fewest people per square kilometer of any English district. On average, only 24 people live in each square kilometer.
The Eden district council was created on April 1, 1974. This happened because of the Local Government Act 1972. It combined several smaller areas. These included the Penrith urban district, Alston with Garrigill Rural District, and Penrith Rural District from Cumberland. It also included Appleby Municipal Borough, part of the Lakes urban district, and North Westmorland Rural District from Westmorland.
Part of the beautiful Lake District National Park is located within the Eden district.
