Patterdale is a small village located in the Westmorland and Furness area of Cumbria, England. It's found in the eastern part of the famous Lake District. The name Patterdale also refers to the long valley where the village sits, which is sometimes called the Ullswater Valley. In 2011, about 501 people lived in this charming area.
Discovering Patterdale
Patterdale is a fantastic place for anyone who loves the outdoors. The famous poet William Wordsworth spent time near Patterdale when he was young. He even wrote about his childhood adventures, like fishing in the lake from a boat.
A Place for Adventure
Today, Patterdale is a popular starting point for hill walking. Many people begin their climb to Helvellyn from here, often using the exciting Striding Edge path. Other amazing mountains, called fells, can also be reached from the valley. These include Place Fell, High Street, and Glenridding Dodd. You can also explore many peaks in the Helvellyn range, Fairfield, and St Sunday Crag. At the very end of the valley, you'll find Red Screes and Stony Cove Pike. These fells stand on either side of the Kirkstone Pass, which is a road leading to Ambleside.
Lakes and Valleys
Further north in the valley, you'll find the beautiful lake of Ullswater. Gowbarrow Fell and Hallin Fell offer stunning views overlooking the lake. The only small mountain lake, or tarn, in the valley is Brothers Water. This was one of the first places in the Lake District to be protected by the National Trust. The only other village in this valley is Glenridding.
Patterdale village has a youth hostel, a church, a primary school, and a hotel. It can get busy in summer, but it's often quieter than Glenridding. Many people consider Patterdale a perfect place for walkers. Even the famous guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright said it was his favorite valley in the Lake District. He loved that it was still relatively peaceful and not too crowded with tourists.
In December 2015, Patterdale and Glenridding were significantly affected by a big storm called Storm Desmond.
Geography and Roads
The A592 road runs through the Patterdale area. This road connects Windermere to Penrith. It stretches from the high point of the Kirkstone Pass in the south to Glencoyne Bridge in the north.
