Hartsop Dodd is a beautiful fell (which is a type of mountain or hill) located in the amazing Lake District in England. It stands southeast of a lake called Brothers Water.

Even though Hartsop Dodd is connected to a larger mountain named Caudale Moor, it's special! A famous writer and artist, Alfred Wainwright, gave it its own important status in his books about the Lakeland Fells. Many people still follow his ideas today.

What is Hartsop Dodd Like?

Hartsop Dodd is part of a long, grassy ridge that comes down from Caudale Moor. This ridge starts wide and then gets narrower. It eventually rises up to form the rounded top of Hartsop Dodd.

On one side of the ridge is a high valley called Caudale. On the other side is Pasture Bottom, where Pasture Beck flows. This stream eventually joins the water from Brothers Water near the village of Hartsop.

If you look at Hartsop Dodd from the village of Hartsop, it looks like its own tall, bell-shaped mountain. But from other places, you can see it's connected to the bigger Caudale Moor.

The Top of Hartsop Dodd

When you reach the top of Hartsop Dodd, you'll find a stone wall crossing the summit. A wooden post marks the very highest point. From here, you can see many of the eastern and far eastern fells. The view of Dovedale valley is especially impressive! It's a great spot to take in the scenery.

How to Climb Hartsop Dodd

You can climb Hartsop Dodd by following the ridge directly from the village of Hartsop. There are also paths on the western side of the ridge that you can use. It's a rewarding climb with great views waiting at the top!

A Look at History: Mining

Did you know there's some history on Hartsop Dodd? Near the ridge above Hartsop, you can find old mine workings. These are the remains of a place called Low Hartsop Mine, also known as Myers Head Mine.

People tried to mine for lead here between 1867 and 1870. However, it wasn't very successful and didn't make much money. Today, these old workings are just a reminder of the past.
