Langwathby is a small village located in northern Cumbria, England. It's found in the historic county of Cumberland. The village is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) northeast of Penrith. It sits right on the east bank of the River Eden. In 2011, about 866 people lived in Langwathby.

The heart of the village is a large green area. Around this green, you'll find St Peter's church, the local pub, a shop and post office, and the village hall. There's also a primary school on the road leading to Little Salkeld, along with two garages. Langwathby is also home to the 'Pride of Cumbria' helicopter, which is part of the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

What's in a Name?

The name 'Langwathby' tells us a bit about the village's past. It comes from old words. 'Lang' means 'long', 'wath' means 'ford' (a shallow place to cross a river), and 'by' means 'village'. So, Langwathby means 'long ford village'. This name refers to a place where people used to cross the River Eden. Sometimes, locals call it Langanby.

A Glimpse into History

Langwathby has an interesting history. In the 1600s, the open land called Langwathby moor was a famous place for horse races. The very last race held there was in 1699.

The Settle and Carlisle Railway has a train station in the village. It was built in 1876. Today, the old station building has been turned into a cozy cafe.

The village's name comes from a ford that crossed the river. Later, a stone bridge with three arches was built to replace it. This bridge was a toll bridge, meaning you had to pay to cross it. Sadly, a flood washed it away in 1968. A metal bridge was put up as a temporary replacement, and it's still there today!

Langwathby Hall used to be home to a fun visitor attraction called Eden Ostrich World. It was a working ostrich farm where you could see these huge birds. However, it closed down in 2012.

How the Village is Run

Langwathby is part of an electoral ward (a local voting area) with the same name. This ward stretches from Gamblesby in the northeast down to Edenhall in the south. In 2011, the total population of this ward was 1,562 people.

Local Businesses

Langwathby has some important local businesses. There is a factory that processes chicken. There's also a mill that makes animal feed for farm animals.

Just outside the nearby village of Edenhall, at a place called Barbary Plains, there used to be a factory that made cement blocks. Now, that site is used as a depot and main office for a company that transports goods.
