The Eustis Estate is a large, historic property in Milton, Massachusetts. Its most famous feature is a grand stone mansion built in 1878 for the Eustis family.

This beautiful house was designed by the well-known architect William Ralph Emerson. The style is a mix of different designs popular in the late 1800s, known as Late Victorian. The estate also includes other buildings, like a gatehouse and a stable.

In 2016, the estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places, a list of important places in the United States. Today, a group called Historic New England owns most of the property. They opened it as a museum in 2017 for everyone to visit.

The Grand Mansion and its Design

The main house is set back from the road on a large piece of land. It was built to impress visitors and show the family's wealth.

A Unique Stone Building

The mansion is a three-story building made from local stone. It has a striking red tile roof and colorful brickwork on its six chimneys. The design is a fun mix of styles. It has a special covered entrance called a porte-cochere, where carriages could drop off passengers without them getting wet in the rain.

The house also has many gables (the triangular parts of the roof) and sections that stick out, which are common in the Queen Anne style of architecture. The architect, William Ralph Emerson, designed it to be a one-of-a-kind home.

The Surrounding Land and Buildings

The entire Eustis Estate covers 110 acres. Much of this land, about 80 acres, is protected, which means it can't be built on. This helps preserve the natural scenery around the mansion.

Besides the main house, there are other historic buildings on the property.

  • A gatehouse and a stable stand near the road. They are also built from stone. The stable is now a private home.
  • Another house on the property was built in the 1890s and moved to the estate in 1910.

History of the Eustis Family Estate

The story of the estate begins in 1878 with William Ellery Channing Eustis. His family had owned land in the area for a long time.

He and his wife, Edith Hemenway, decided to build their grand home here. Edith's family was also very wealthy, which helped pay for the huge project. The Eustis family owned the estate for over 130 years.

In 2012, the family sold the property to Historic New England. This organization works to save important historic buildings. Thanks to them, the Eustis Estate is now preserved for the public to enjoy.

Visiting the Estate Today

The Eustis Estate is now a museum where you can see beautiful art and furniture from the past. The grounds are also open for exploring.

The museum sometimes hosts special events, like a sculpture exhibit that was set up on the grounds in 2021. The beautiful house and its scenery also make it a popular place for weddings and other celebrations.
