Eva Fong Chan (born in 1897, died in 1991) was an amazing artist. She was a painter with both Chinese and Native American heritage. Eva was one of the very first Asian American women to show her artwork widely across the United States!

Early Life and Talents

Eva Fong Chan was born in Sacramento, California, on April 1, 1897. She was the second of thirteen children in her family. From a young age, Eva showed a strong interest in art.

In high school, she won an art competition. Her winning artwork was even featured on Christmas cards! During this time, Eva also won the first-ever Miss Chinatown USA pageant in the Bay Area. She also started learning to play the piano, showing she had many talents.

Becoming a Professional Artist

Eva attended Sacramento Junior College for a while. Later, in 1930, she went back to school to study art seriously. She enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts.

The 1930s were her busiest time for painting. She created many beautiful pieces and showed them in various museums. Eva worked with both oil paints and watercolors.

Later Years and Other Talents

After her first child was born in 1940, Eva painted less often. However, she continued to share her love for music. She became a piano teacher and taught many students throughout her life.
