Who are the Han Chinese?
The largest group of Chinese people are called the Han Chinese. When most people say "Chinese," they are often thinking of the Han Chinese. This group makes up a very large part of the world's population, about 19%. Many Han Chinese also live in countries outside of China.
Other Ethnic Groups in China
China is home to many different ethnic groups. The country officially recognizes 56 different groups. Some of these include the Zhuang, Hui, Manchu, and Uyghurs. Each of these groups has its own special history and way of life.
Ethnic Groups in Taiwan
Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China (ROC), also has its own unique groups of people. Taiwan officially recognizes 14 different tribes of Taiwanese aborigines. These are the native people who lived on the island long before others arrived.
