Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Eva Miranda Galcerán is a Spanish mathematician who studies how things move and change over time, especially in a field called symplectic geometry. She has done important work on the mathematics behind how planets move, like the famous three-body problem (which looks at how three objects in space affect each other).

Her Journey in Mathematics

Eva Miranda Galcerán started her math journey at the University of Barcelona. She earned her first degree in algebra and geometry in 1999. She continued her studies there and received her Ph.D. in 2003. Her Ph.D. work was about a complex math topic called symplectic linearization of singular Lagrangian foliations.

Teaching and Research Roles

From 2001 to 2006, Eva Miranda was an assistant professor at the University of Barcelona. She also worked as a researcher in France at the University of Toulouse from 2004 to 2007.

Later, she became a "Juan de la Cierva Researcher" at the Autonomous University of Barcelona from 2007 to 2009. In 2009, she joined the mathematics department at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. She became a Full Professor there in 2018. Since 2016, she has led the Laboratory of Geometry and Dynamical Systems at the Polytechnic University. This lab studies how shapes and movements change over time.

Awards and Special Recognition

Eva Miranda has received many important awards for her work in mathematics.

ICREA Acadèmia Awards

In 2016, she won the Acadèmia Award from the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). This made her an ICREA Acadèmia Professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in 2017. She won this award again in 2021. This was a big deal because she was the first mathematician in Catalonia to receive the ICREA Acadèmia prize twice!

International Recognition

In 2017, Eva Miranda made history again. She became the first Spanish mathematician and only the second woman ever to win a Chair of Excellence from the Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris.

In July 2021, she was invited to speak at the 8th European Congress of Mathematics. This is a very important event for mathematicians.

She also received the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award in 2022 from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2022, she was given the Francois Deruyts Prize by the Académie Royale de Belgique. She was also chosen as the 2023 London Mathematical Society Hardy lecturer.
