Eva Ruth Spalding (born December 19, 1883 – died March 1969) was a talented British composer. She wrote music for string quartets and piano. She also created songs by setting poems from many different poets to music.

Early Life and Education

Eva Ruth Spalding was born in Blackheath, a part of London, England. Her father, Henry Spalding, was a paper merchant. Eva was the youngest of eight children in her family.

She studied music at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1904, she passed an exam to become a violin teacher. Eva also traveled to Russia to study with a famous violin teacher named Leopold Auer at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.

After finishing her studies, Eva came back to England. She taught piano and violin to students privately and at Bradfield College.

Her Music

Eva Ruth Spalding was known for setting poems to music. This means she wrote melodies and harmonies for words written by poets. Some of the poets whose words she used include William Blake, George Herbert, and Walt Whitman.

Her music was published by a company called Maurice Senart. Besides her many songs, she also wrote pieces for piano and string instruments.
