Early Life and Schooling
Evan Davis was born in Malvern, Worcestershire. His parents were from South Africa and had moved to England in 1962. They left South Africa to get away from apartheid, a system that unfairly separated people based on their race. When Davis was two, his family moved to Ashtead, Surrey, where he grew up.
Davis went to Dorking County Grammar School, which later became The Ashcombe School. He was a very good student and became the head boy.
After finishing school, he studied at St John's College, Oxford, from 1981 to 1984. He earned a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Later, he went to the famous Harvard University in the United States to continue his studies.
Starting His Career
Davis began his career as an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies. An economist studies how a country's money and resources are used. For a short time, he helped the government develop a new tax system called the Community Charge, which was often called the "poll tax."
In 1993, Davis joined the BBC as an economics correspondent. From 1997 to 2001, he was the economics editor for the TV show Newsnight.
Working at the BBC
Davis has had many important jobs at the BBC, becoming one of its most famous faces.
Economics Editor
As the BBC's economics editor, Davis was in charge of explaining news about money and business. He appeared on many BBC radio and TV shows, including the Ten O'Clock News. He helped shape how the BBC reported on economic topics.
Davis also wrote a blog for the BBC website called "Evanomics." On his blog, he used economics to explain everyday things, like how to choose wine or how the government's budget works.
He won several awards for his journalism, including the Work Foundation's Broadcast Journalist of the Year award three times.
The 'Today' Programme
In 2008, Davis left his job as Economics Editor to become a full-time presenter on the Today programme, a major morning news show on BBC Radio 4. He once joked that one of the best things about radio is that "you can look things up on Wikipedia while on air."
The 'Bottom Line' and 'Dragons' Den'
While working on Today, Davis also started hosting The Bottom Line. This is a weekly radio and TV show where business leaders discuss important topics.
He also became the host of Dragons' Den on BBC Two. On this show, entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to a panel of wealthy investors, or "Dragons," hoping to get money for their projects.
Presenting 'Newsnight'
In 2014, Davis took over from the famous presenter Jeremy Paxman on the TV show Newsnight. He presented the show for four years.
In 2017, the BBC found that Davis had broken its rules on being impartial during the French presidential election. The BBC said that in interviews, he seemed to favour one candidate, Emmanuel Macron, over another, Marine Le Pen. BBC presenters are expected to be neutral and not take sides.
Hosting the 'PM' Programme
After leaving Newsnight in 2018, Davis became the new presenter of the BBC Radio 4 show PM. It is an evening news programme that looks at the day's biggest stories. He started hosting the show on 5 November 2018.
