Writing for Children
A Special First Book
Eve Sutton's first book for children was called My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes. This book came about because her cousin-in-law, Lynley Dodd, suggested they work together. Eve wrote the story, and Lynley drew the pictures.
This picture book is now considered a classic in New Zealand. It was the only picture book Eve Sutton ever wrote. In 1975, My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes won the Esther Glen Award, which is a special prize for children's books.
Books for Older Kids
After her first success, Eve Sutton started writing books for older children. She wrote a series of novels that told stories about what it was like for families who moved to New Zealand from other countries.
In 1990, Eve Sutton received another important award. She was given the Award for Services to Children's Literature by the New Zealand Children's Literature Association. This award recognized her important contributions to children's books.
