Everett A. Kelly (September 2, 1926 – November 13, 2018) was an American politician. He served in the Florida House of Representatives, which is where laws are made for the state of Florida.
He represented different areas, called districts, in Florida. He was a member of the Florida House from 1978 until 2000. That's a long time!
Everett Kelly's Political Career
Everett Kelly was first elected in 1978. At that time, he was a member of the Democratic Party. He won re-election nine more times.
In August 1997, he changed his political party. He became a member of the Republican Party. He then won one more election in 1998. This was his eleventh and final term in the Florida House.
From 1990 to 1992, he held a special role. He was the Speaker Pro Tempore. This means he helped lead the Florida House of Representatives.
Life Beyond Politics
Besides being a politician, Everett Kelly was also a pharmacist. He continued to work in his profession. He practiced as a pharmacist even while serving in the Florida House. Many other politicians did this too.
He also enjoyed writing books! He wrote "The Atlatl" in 2005. He also wrote a historical novel called "Ida's Caleb" in 2005. For younger readers, he wrote a children's book. It was called "Tiny Tom: A Growing Up Story" (2007). In 2014, he shared his own life story in "A Memoir - From Nothing to Fulfillment".
In his later years, he lived in Tavares, Florida. He passed away in November 2018 at the age of 92. He is buried at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
Early Life and Education
Everett Kelly was born in 1926 in Foley, Alabama. His family moved to Florida in 1928. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
After the war, he went to college. He earned a bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from the University of Florida. He also received a bachelor's degree in Zoology from Florida State University.
