An everything bagel is a popular type of bagel. It's covered with many different toppings. These toppings usually include poppy seeds, sesame seeds, dried onion, dried garlic, and salt. Sometimes, you might also find pepper or red pepper flakes. The name "everything" comes from all the toppings, not from what's inside the bagel.

This special topping mix has inspired other foods too. You can find "everything" versions of chips, croissants, and even hot dog buns! Many bakeries and restaurants sell everything bagels. No one is completely sure who invented it. But it probably first appeared between 1973 and 1980.

Who Invented the Everything Bagel?

The exact story of how the everything bagel started is not clear. Many people claim to have invented it. Food experts say that the 1970s was a time when people tried new bagel flavors.

David Gussin's Story

David Gussin says he created the everything bagel around 1980. He worked at a bagel shop. One day, he was sweeping up leftover toppings from the oven. Instead of throwing them away, he saved them. He then asked the owner to bake bagels with all these mixed toppings.

Other Inventors

Other people also claim to have invented this popular bagel. These include famous chef Joe Bastianich and sports expert Brandon Steiner.

Seth Godin, a well-known writer, said he worked in a bagel factory. He claims they made everything bagels two years before Gussin's story.

Brandon Steiner's Claim

Brandon Steiner says he invented it even earlier, in 1973. He was 14 years old and worked as a night baker. He wrote that he was experimenting with different toppings. He tried mixing sesame, salt, poppy, onion, and garlic. Then, he decided to put all of them on one bagel. He says that's how the everything bagel was born.

Even with all these claims, David Gussin believes he was the first to use the name "everything bagel." He admits others might have made a similar bagel before him.
