A Look Back: History of the Building

Postcard of the Exchange Building in 1911. The decorative top of the building was actually red brick rather than white.

The Exchange Building was finished in 1910. It was built by two groups: the Memphis Cotton Exchange and the Merchants Exchange. People in Memphis soon started calling it simply the "Exchange Building."

A talented architect from Memphis named Neander Montgomery Woods Jr. designed the building. He used a special style called Beaux Arts. This style is known for being grand and decorative.

In 1979, the Exchange Building became an important landmark. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special place with historical value. On the list, it's called the Memphis Merchants Exchange.

What the Exchange Building is Used For Today

Today, the Exchange Building is a "mixed-use" building. This means it has different kinds of spaces inside. It has hotel rooms and apartments where people live. Even the top floors are used for homes!

The building was changed into apartments and hotel units in 1996. Now, it has 202 different units. Some of these units are specially designed for people with disabilities.
