The Executive of the 5th Northern Ireland Assembly was like a special government team. It was formed in Northern Ireland on May 26, 2016. This team was a "power-sharing coalition." This means that two main political parties, the DUP and Sinn Féin, worked together to run the government. They shared power to make important decisions for Northern Ireland.
This government team was led by Arlene Foster as the First Minister and Martin McGuinness as the Deputy First Minister. It was created after the Northern Ireland Assembly elections on May 6, 2016. The DUP and Sinn Féin were the biggest parties after these elections.
For the first time, some parties chose not to join the government. Instead, they decided to be in formal opposition. This left the DUP and Sinn Féin to form the government on their own. The Executive lasted less than a year. It stopped working on January 16, 2017. This happened when Deputy First Minister McGuinness resigned because of a disagreement about a heating scheme.
