Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Explore! is a super cool children's museum that is being planned for Washington, D.C.. It's designed to be a fun place where kids can learn and discover new things. The idea for this museum came from Jane Cafritz, who is a very generous person and helps build new places in the D.C. area. The museum will be part of a new building project in the Fort Totten neighborhood.

What is 'Explore!'?

'Explore!' is a special museum just for kids. It will have lots of hands-on activities. The goal is to help young people learn about the world around them in exciting ways. Jane Cafritz, who is a real estate developer, is making this museum happen. She loves to give back to her community.

A Sneak Peek: The Portrait Gallery Exhibit

Before the main museum opened, there was a special preview exhibit, also called 'Explore!'. This exhibit was held at the National Portrait Gallery. It started in June 2019 and ran for about a year.

What Kids Did at the Exhibit

The exhibit was all about portraits. Kids got to be artists themselves! They could create portraits using different materials. This included making self-portraits, which are pictures of themselves. They could also draw or paint pictures of their family members. Some kids even used selfies to create their art. It was a great way to explore creativity.

Who Helped Make it Happen

The 'Explore!' exhibit at the Portrait Gallery was supported by several people. Jane Cafritz and Calvin Cafritz helped fund it. Morton and Grace Bender, along with Paul and Rose Carter, also provided support. Their help made it possible for many children to enjoy this artistic experience.
