Ezekiel Ezra Smith (born May 23, 1852 – died December 6, 1933) was an important American educator and a diplomat. He helped lead schools and represented the United States in another country.

Ezekiel Ezra Smith was born in Duplin County, North Carolina. His parents, Alexander and Caroline Smith, were free black people. This meant they were not enslaved, which was unusual for many black families in that time.

Early Life and Education

Ezekiel Smith was very dedicated to learning. He earned a bachelor's degree from Shaw University in 1878. Later, he also received a doctorate, which is a very high academic degree.

A Leader in Education

In 1883, Ezekiel Smith became the leader of the State Colored Normal School. This school is now known as Fayetteville State University. A "normal school" was a special type of school that trained teachers. Smith was the principal and chief administrative officer, meaning he was in charge of running the entire school. He stayed in this important role for many years, almost until his death in 1933. He helped educate many future teachers.

Ezekiel Smith also served his country in other ways.

Diplomat to Liberia

From 1888 to 1890, he was the United States Ambassador to Liberia. An ambassador is a top diplomat who represents their country in another nation. Smith lived in Liberia and worked to build good relationships between the United States and Liberia.
