The Făgăraş Mountains are located in the central part of Romania. They stretch for about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from east to west. They form a natural barrier between two important regions: Transylvania to the north and Wallachia to the south. This location has made them important throughout history.
What Makes Them Special?
The Făgăraş Mountains are famous for their rugged beauty. They have sharp, rocky peaks and deep valleys. Many of these valleys were carved out by ancient glaciers. This means you can find many beautiful glacial lakes here.
Glacial Lakes
One of the most famous glacial lakes is Lake Bâlea. It is a stunning lake located at a high altitude. These lakes are often very clear and reflect the surrounding peaks. They are popular spots for hikers and tourists.
The Transfăgărășan Road
Another special feature is the Transfăgărășan road. This road is one of the most spectacular in the world. It winds its way through the mountains, offering amazing views. It was built for military purposes but is now a popular tourist attraction. The road is usually open only during the warmer months because of heavy snow.
Animals and Plants
The Făgăraş Mountains are home to a variety of wildlife. You might spot animals like brown bears, wolves, and lynx. One of the most iconic animals is the chamois, a type of goat-antelope that lives in high mountain areas.
The mountains also have many different plants. At lower altitudes, you'll find thick forests of fir and spruce trees. As you go higher, the trees disappear, and you'll see alpine meadows with colorful wildflowers. These plants are adapted to the harsh mountain climate.
