Frances was taught at home in Richmond. She also traveled a lot in Europe. She visited countries like Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. These travels helped her learn about different cultures.

In 1906, Frances married William Sinclair Crichton. After they got married, they moved to Liverpool. It was there that she started her career as a writer.
