Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fabyan (also known as New Boston in the past) is a small village located in the town of Thompson, Connecticut, in the United States. It's a place with a rich history, especially connected to early American settlements and Native American communities.

What is Fabyan?

Fabyan is a quiet village found within the larger town of Thompson. It's known for its historical roots as a place where mills and factories once thrived. Today, it remains a part of Connecticut's landscape, carrying stories from centuries ago.

A Look Back: Fabyan's History

Fabyan started out as a busy mill village. A mill village is a community that grew up around a factory, usually a textile mill, where people worked and lived. This village was first called New Boston.

From New Boston to Fabyan

In its early days, New Boston had different businesses. There was a clothier, which is someone who makes or sells clothes. There was also a potash manufacturer. Potash is a type of salt used in making soap, glass, and fertilizer. The main business was the New Boston Textile Company, a factory that made fabrics.

In 1908, a group called the Fabyan Brothers bought the New Boston Textile Company. When they took over, they decided to change the name of both the mill and the village. That's how New Boston became known as Fabyan!

The Maanexit Village Connection

Close to where Fabyan is today, there was once an important Native American village called Maanexit. This village was special because it was a "praying town". Praying towns were places set up by English colonists in the 1600s. They were for Native Americans, often called "Praying Indians," who had converted to Christianity. These towns were meant to help Native Americans live according to English customs and beliefs.
