The Fahmy Foundation is a non-profit group based in Canada. It works to protect freedom of the press. This means journalists should be able to report the news without being stopped or put in jail. The Foundation also tries to help reporters who are in prison.

How it Started

A journalist named Mohamed Fahmy and his fiancee, Marwa Omara, started the Fahmy Foundation in 2015. They wanted to help other journalists who were in trouble.

One of the first people they tried to help was a photojournalist from Egypt named Mahmoud Abou Zeid, also known as "Shawkan". He was in prison for his work.

The Foundation also worked to help other journalists and writers. They helped Jason Rezaian, an American journalist who was in Iran. He was set free in January 2016. They also tried to help Ahmed Ziada from Egypt and Mohamed Al-Ajami, a poet from Qatar.
