The Fairmount Apartments are a special building in Jersey City. Many people call them the Grand Lady of Jersey City because they are so old and beautiful. You can find them in Hudson County, New Jersey, in the United States.
This building is very important! It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 3, 1995. This means it's a historic place worth protecting. The Fairmount Apartments are a great example of the Arts and Crafts style of building from the early 1900s. The building has two parts that look like the letter "L". Each part is about four and a half stories tall. They are made of brick and concrete and are connected by a smaller, one-story building.
History of the Fairmount Apartments
The Fairmount Apartments were designed by a company called Newman and Harris. They were experts at creating beautiful buildings.
Building Construction and Design
The first part of the building, the eastern section, was built in 1909. Just a few years later, in 1912, the western section was finished. When they were first built, each section had 33 apartments. That's a lot of homes in one building!
Changes Over Time
In 1962, a person named Father Divine bought the building. Later, in 1995, the Fairmount Apartments got a big makeover. After the renovation, the building changed a bit. Today, it has 59 apartments. These apartments are now used as homes for senior citizens.
