The Faith Cabin Library at Anderson County Training School in Pendleton, South Carolina was a very important place. It was one of 26 special libraries built in South Carolina. These libraries were created to give African Americans in country areas a chance to read and learn. At the time, many other libraries would not let them in.
A Library for Everyone
The Faith Cabin Library was a small, one-room building. It was made from logs and had a chimney and foundation built from fieldstone. This library was built on the land of the Anderson County Training School. This school was a Rosenwald School, which were schools built for African American children in the Southern United States during a time of segregation.
How It Was Built
The local community helped build this library. People gave money and even timber (wood) to make it happen. It was a true community effort to create a place for learning.
Serving the Community
The library was open all year round. It served both the students at the Anderson County Training School and the wider community. It was a vital resource for books and education.
The Faith Cabin Library stayed open until 1954. That year, a new school was built nearby. This new school offered better facilities for all students.
Where Is It Now?
Today, the Faith Cabin Library building is owned by the Pendleton Community Center. It stands as a reminder of a time when communities worked together to provide education for everyone.
