Exploring Falls Park: What to See
Falls Park has several interesting buildings and spots to check out. Each one tells a part of the park's story, from its natural beauty to its history.
Grab a Bite at the Falls Overlook Café
The Falls Overlook Café is a neat place to eat. It's located right across the river from the observation tower. What's cool is that this building used to be a power plant that made electricity from water! Now, it's a cozy spot where you can enjoy lunch and dinner during the summer months.
See the Views from the Observation Tower
Want to see the whole park from above? Head to the observation tower! It's connected to the visitor center, which is a helpful place for tourists. The tower is usually open from 9 AM to 9 PM during the summer. At the visitor center, you can get tips for exploring the city. They also have lots of cool Sioux Falls souvenirs to remember your trip!
Discover the Queen Bee Mill Ruins
The Queen Bee Mill is one of the most famous ruins in Falls Park. This huge mill opened in late 1881. It had seven stories and was built from a strong stone called Sioux quartzite, which came from the park itself. Building it cost a lot of money – almost $500,000 back then! It was a very modern mill that could process 1,500 bushels of grain every day.
However, the mill didn't last long. By 1883, it had to close down. There wasn't enough water power to keep it running, and they couldn't get enough wheat to process. Today, you can explore the impressive stone remains of this once-grand building. It's a reminder of the city's early industrial history.
Learn About Farming at the Stockyards Ag Experience Barn
On the northern side of Falls Park, you'll find another old stone barn made of Sioux quartzite. For a long time, people weren't sure about its exact history. Some stories say it was built in the late 1800s for a dairy farm.
The City of Sioux Falls has owned this barn since 1917. Back then, it was used to stable animals that helped with city work. Today, this historic barn has a new purpose! It's home to the Stockyards Ag Experience. This is a museum and learning center where you can discover all about agriculture and how it connects to our lives. It's a fun way to learn about farming and food.
