The Oligodon pseudotaeniatus, also known as the false striped kukri snake, is a type of snake from the Colubridae family. This snake lives only in Thailand. It has been found in the Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Saraburi Province, and Bangkok.

This snake got its name, pseudotaeniatus, because it looks a lot like another snake called Oligodon taeniatus. Before 2008, people sometimes confused these two species.

About This Snake

What Does It Look Like?

The false striped kukri snake is a small snake. Male snakes found were about 23.6 to 25.4 centimeters (about 9 to 10 inches) long from snout to vent. Their tails were about 6.1 to 6.6 centimeters (about 2.4 to 2.6 inches) long.

One female snake found was about 22.2 centimeters (about 8.7 inches) long. Her tail was about 3.6 centimeters (about 1.4 inches) long.

This snake looks very similar to the Oligodon taeniatus snake. However, you can tell them apart by a few things. The false striped kukri snake has 17 rows of scales on its back in the middle of its body. It also has eight scales above its upper lip. It does not have any blotches or spots on its back or tail. Instead, it has one black stripe running down the middle of its back. It does not have stripes along its sides.

Where Does It Live?

The false striped kukri snake lives on the ground. It is also a diurnal animal, which means it is active during the daytime. You can find these snakes in forests where trees lose their leaves. They also live in farm areas, like fields where cassava plants are grown.

Is It Safe?

Scientists believe there are no major threats to this snake right now. This is because it can live in places changed by humans, like farms. However, it might no longer be found in the city of Bangkok. The snake is thought to be safe in parts of its home range, like the Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve. This reserve is located on the western edge of the Khorat Plateau.
