The Story of Fan Milk
Fan Milk Limited is a company from Ghana that sells dairy products. It is based in Accra. The company started in 1960 and has grown to operate in other countries like Benin, Togo, and Burkina Faso.
When it first started, the company was known as the Ghanaian Milk Company. In the early 1960s, it received money from investors in Denmark. At first, they mainly sold pasteurized milk. But in 1962, the company changed its name to Fan Milk Limited. They then started making other frozen dairy products. These included ice cream, yoghurt, and ice lollies.
Fan Milk Limited was the first company in Ghana with foreign investors to become a Public Limited Liability company in 1967. This means its shares could be bought and sold by the public. It was also one of the first companies to be listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange on October 18, 1991. By 2003, more than 3,250 people owned parts of the company.
Who Owns Fan Milk?
In December 2003, some of the main owners of Fan Milk were Fan Milk International Denmark and the Danish Industrialization Fund For Developing Countries. Another company called Enterprise Insurance also owned a part of it.
Later, in 2013, two new big companies became joint owners of Fan Milk. These were The Abraaj Group and Danone. Danone eventually became the main owner in 2016. Then, on July 30, 2019, Danone bought all the remaining shares from Abraaj. This meant Danone now owned 100% of Fan Milk, taking full control of the company.
