Fang facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A fang is a special kind of sharp tooth that many animals use to catch their food. Think of animals like wolves, cats, spiders, and snakes – they all have fangs! These teeth are super helpful for grabbing and holding onto prey.

Some animals, like spiders, tarantulas, and venomous snakes, have fangs that are hollow inside. This is a really cool feature!

How Venomous Fangs Work

Animals with hollow fangs also have special glands that make venom. Venom is a type of natural chemical that can affect other animals. When these animals bite their prey, the venom travels through the hollow fangs and into the prey. This venom can paralyze the prey, making it unable to move. This makes it much easier for the animal to eat its meal safely.

Different Kinds of Fangs

Not all fangs are the same!

  • Snake Fangs: Snakes have amazing fangs that can actually fold back. They tuck them away under the skin in their mouth when they are not using them, just like a cat can pull its claws back. When a snake is ready to strike, its fangs pop out and are ready for action.
  • Spider and Tarantula Fangs: Unlike most animals, spiders and tarantulas have fangs that are located outside of their mouth. They use these fangs to inject venom into their prey.

Fangs are a great example of how animals have adapted unique tools to survive and thrive in their environments!
