Fanny Kassel is a French mathematician born in 1983. She is known for her work in a special area of Mathematics called the theory of Lie groups. Lie groups are like special collections of numbers or shapes that can be smoothly changed, and they are very important in many parts of math and science.

Fanny Kassel's Journey in Math

Early Education and PhD

Fanny Kassel began her studies at a famous French school, the École normale supérieure, in 2003. This school is known for training top scientists and thinkers. She then went on to earn her PhD, which is a very high-level university degree, in 2009. She completed her PhD at the University of Paris-Sud, and her main teacher was Yves Benoist. Her research for her PhD looked at complex mathematical spaces.

Working as a Researcher

After finishing her PhD, Fanny Kassel joined the CNRS. The CNRS is a big research organization in France. She worked at the Paul-Painlevé Laboratory, which is part of the University of Lille I. She stayed there until 2016. Later, she moved to the IHÉS, another important research center, where she continued her work as a CNRS researcher.

Awards and Recognitions

Major Awards and Grants

Fanny Kassel has received several important awards for her work in mathematics. In 2015, she was given the CNRS Bronze Medal. This award recognizes promising young researchers. The next year, in 2016, she received an ERC starting grant. This grant helps young scientists begin their own research projects.

Speaking at Global Conferences

Her expertise is recognized worldwide. In 2018, she was invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro. This is a very important event where mathematicians from all over the world share their latest discoveries. Her talk was about "Geometric structures and representations of discrete groups," which are advanced topics in mathematics.

Professorships and Medals

In 2020, she was named a MSRI Chern Professor for the fall semester. This is a special honor given to leading mathematicians. Most recently, in 2024, Fanny Kassel was awarded the mathematics medal from the French Academy of Sciences. This is one of the highest honors a mathematician can receive in France.
