Farmington is a small, unincorporated community located in Atchison County, Kansas, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. It's known for its history tied to the early days of railroads in Kansas.

History

Farmington began to grow when the Missouri Pacific Railroad built its tracks through this area. Railroads were super important in the 1800s because they helped people travel and transport goods across the country much faster than before. This made places along the tracks, like Farmington, important stops.

A post office was opened in Farmington in 1868. A post office is where people could send and receive letters and packages. It was a vital connection for the community to the outside world. The Farmington post office served the community for many years, but it eventually closed in 1940.

Famous People from Farmington

Even though Farmington is a small community, some interesting people have connections to it:

  • Pardee Butler - He was a Free-State advocate and an abolitionist. This means he strongly supported Kansas becoming a free state (without slavery) and worked to end slavery in the United States. He was also a preacher.
  • Milo Hastings - He was an inventor who came up with many new ideas.
