Faro is a small place in Wayne County, North Carolina, in the United States. It is an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it is part of the larger county.

The 1961 B-52 Crash Near Faro

In 1961, something very unusual happened near Faro. A large military plane, a B-52 bomber, broke apart in the sky. This happened about 12 miles (19 km) north of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

What Happened During the Crash?

The plane was carrying two large devices called hydrogen bombs. When the aircraft broke up, these devices fell to the ground. One of them landed in a field about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) southwest of Faro.

The Recovery Effort

After the crash, special teams from the military worked to find and secure the devices. They carefully recovered the parts that had fallen. This was a very important operation to make sure everything was safe.
