Farrar is a small, unincorporated community located in Polk County, Iowa, in the United States. Being "unincorporated" means it doesn't have its own local city government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's governed by the county. In Farrar, you can find an old elementary school building that is no longer used, one church, and about 13 houses. Because it's unincorporated, all the people living in Farrar now have a Maxwell, Iowa address for their mail.

History of Farrar

Farrar's story really began with the arrival of the railroad! A new train line was built through the area between 1902 and 1903. This was a big deal because railroads helped small towns grow by connecting them to bigger cities and making it easier to transport goods and people.

How Farrar Got Its Name

The community of Farrar was named to honor one of the important people who worked on creating that new railroad line. It was common for towns to be named after key figures in their development.

Early Services and Population

Soon after the railroad arrived, a post office was set up in Farrar in 1904. This meant residents could send and receive mail more easily. In 1925, Farrar had a population of 42 people. By 1940, the number of residents had slightly changed to 36.

Education in the Area

Even though Farrar is a small community, students living there attend public schools operated by the Bondurant–Farrar Community School District. This school district serves several communities in the area, providing education for local children.
