Farrenburg was first known as "Farrenberg". The community was officially mapped out in 1882. This happened when a railroad line was built to that spot. The name "Farrenberg" came from W. A. Farrenberg. He was the original owner of the land where the community started.
A post office was opened in Farrenberg in 1897. This allowed people living there to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. It stayed open until 1918.
