What is Sawm?
Sawm is the Arabic word for fasting. It means to not eat or drink anything during the day. This includes all food, water, and other drinks. Muslims who fast start their day before sunrise with a meal called Suhoor. They break their fast after sunset with a meal called Iftar.
Why do Muslims Fast?
Muslims fast for many reasons. Fasting helps them feel closer to God. It teaches them patience and self-control. It also helps them understand what it feels like to be hungry or thirsty. This can make them more thankful for what they have. Fasting also reminds Muslims to be kind and generous to those in need.
When Do Muslims Fast?
The most well-known time for Sawm is during the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The Islamic calendar follows the moon, so Ramadan starts on a different date each year. Fasting during Ramadan is a duty for all healthy adult Muslims.
Who Does Not Have to Fast?
Not everyone has to fast during Ramadan. Children, sick people, and travelers do not have to fast. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding also do not have to fast. If someone cannot fast, they might make up the missed days later. Or, they might feed a poor person for each day they missed.
