About Fatima Jamal

Fatima Jamal was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She went to Morehouse College for her studies. Later, she attended The New School to learn about making documentary films. After finishing graduate school, Fatima began her gender transition. She believes moving from Atlanta to New York City helped her grow and succeed.

Fatima Jamal creates art that shows her experiences. She focuses on Black, queer, and feminine stories. She has said she loves to capture the lives of Black, queer, and trans people. She also enjoys exploring their histories through her work.

Modeling and Acting

Fatima Jamal has walked on fashion runways. These are special stages where models show new clothes. She has been part of New York Fashion Week. Fatima is also well-known in the ballroom scene. This is a vibrant community where people compete in dance, fashion, and performance.

She has appeared in the TV show Pose. In 2020, Fatima made history. She was the first Black trans model to walk for a major menswear fashion brand. This was for Stefano Pilati's clothing line.

The film explores how other people's views affect how we see ourselves. It especially looks at how white views can shape self-perception. Fatima focuses on her own Black, larger body in the film. She sees it as a way to invite people to look inward. By September 2020, the project had raised over $55,000. The film was also featured in Artforum magazine.
