Favila or Fafila was the second King of Asturias, a kingdom in what is now northern Spain. He ruled from 737 until his death in 739. Favila was the only son of Pelagius, who was the very first king of Asturias.

Favila's Time as King
Favila became king after his father, Pelagius, passed away. His time as king was quite short, lasting only two years. During his rule, he founded an important building.
Building the Church of Santa Cruz
In 737, King Favila founded the Church of Santa Cruz. This church was built in Cangas de Onís, which was the capital city of his kingdom at the time. This is one of the few known facts about his reign.
How Favila Died
King Favila died in 739. He was killed by a bear while he was out hunting. This event is quite famous in the history of Asturias.
Royal Hunts and Their Importance
Even though Favila died during a hunt, royal hunts were not just for fun. For kings and queens, hunting was an important activity. It helped bring people together at court and showed the king's strength. It was a way to keep the kingdom united.
Favila's Family and Burial
Favila was buried with his wife, Froiluba. Their resting place is in the Church of Santa Cruz de Cangas de Onís, the very church he helped establish.
After Favila's death, his brother-in-law became the next king. This was Alfonso, who was married to Favila's sister, Ermesinda.
